Individual and Society

Songs!

The three songs I listened to was diffrent from eachother, but the song "I am a Rock" by Paul Simon was very diffrent from "No Man is an Island" by John Donne, and "You`ll Never Walk Alone" by Rogers and Hammerstein.

"I am a Rock" is about a man who isolates himself from the world, he has build walls around himself and wont let anyone in. This man uses books and poetry to protect himself and probably to feel important because he has experienced to much loss, to much pain and to much betrayal, so he needs to protect himself.

"No Man is an Island" is a song or poem that tells us that everyone is a part of a bigger cause, no one is entirely by themself and because everyone is a part of mankind, a part of everything, everyone will be affected in some way by eachother.

"You`ll Never Walk Alone" can be about a lot of things, but mainly it is about that you will always have one by your side. I think the song can be about both friendship and religion. If I take friendship the song can mean that you will always have your friend by your side to take care of you, help you and take your side in a conflict.
But if I take religion it can be about that even though you are physically alone, you are not, because God will always be by your side, and lift you up when you are down.

Here you can see some diffrences in these songs, but I think the main diffrences in the songs are the characteristics; the first one is alone, the second is a part of a bigger whole and the third is never alone. Another diffrence is that "I am a Rock" is abouth the "I" person, "You`ll Never Walk Alone" is dedicated to another person, but "No Man is an Island" is generally and to everyone.

I liked the song "I am a Rock" best because it has a catchy melody and the text is deep, so I found it easy to refleckt and think a little about the background of this song, what has happened to make him feel this way? who has done this to him? how many bad relationships has he gone trough to be so depressed that he needed to build a wall?
